According to Head of Product Management, Keith Manston, the new coating is completely transparent so does not affect the appearance of coated products. Treated surfaces are up to 80% self-cleaning. This means that coated assets such as VMS signs and controller cabinets require little attention as inks will wash away in the rain.

Recently installed as part of the upgrade to signals for the Blackpool Tramway, the dedicated ELV tram signal head uses energy-saving, long-life LED technology manufactured by Siemens in their award winning factory in Poole. According to Head of Product Management, Keith Manston, the Siemens ELV solution is priced lower than currently available low-voltage tram signals and all aspects can be lamp monitored as normal ELV LED signals.

Siemens, which ranked top of Dow Jones Sustainability Index in 2011, has further confirmed its green credentials today by incorporating an electric vehicle charging facility at its newly refurbished main site, Ruston Works, in the heart of the City of Lincoln and at the School of Engineering, a joint collaboration with the University of Lincoln. Siemens has adopted a zero-emission electric transport solution to move employees between its sites in Lincoln and the university. Siemens’ new Selective Vehicle Detection (SVD) solution based on TagMaster long-range Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology is to be installed in Ashford, Kent. The system will allow taxis and buses to use an existing gate system giving access to a strategic passenger transport route. Over 100 taxis and 60 local buses will be fitted with semi-passive ID-tags which can be read by the new above ground detectors mounted onto existing traffic poles, lighting columns or other roadside infrastructure. The latest version of SCOOT, the world’s leading adaptive traffic control system, has been integrated by Siemens into their PC-based UTC system. Urban Traffic Control (UTC) systems in the Municipality of Sao Paulo in Brazil have recently been upgraded to Siemens PC SCOOT. The upgrade will further improve the performance of the UTC system and management of the road network in the world’s third largest city. West Berkshire Council has placed a new contract with Siemens to design, supply, install, commission and maintain electronic Variable Message Signs (VMS) to provide parking information for car parks in Newbury town centre. Greater Manchester Combined Authority with Transport for Greater Manchester have awarded to Siemens one of the most significant service contracts of its kind for the long-term maintenance of traffic signalling equipment across all ten districts of Greater Manchester. Newcastle’s Traffic Signals Group has selected Siemens’ latest PC SCOOT system to replace its current Urban Traffic Control (UTC) system. A six month trial to test a solution to reduce vehicle speeds in urban areas and improve road safety has produced very encouraging results. Installation of new traffic signalling equipment by Siemens is underway in Weymouth ahead of the 2012 Games, which will see the world’s leading competitors heading for the sailing events in Weymouth and Portland. Leading UK public services provider Amey, as part of the £2.7bn highways partnership with Birmingham City Council, has placed its first major order for traffic signalling equipment with Siemens. According to a report* into the operation of traffic lights in the UK published last month for the RAC Foundation, the number of sets of traffic lights has increased across the UK by almost a third in the past decade, in London it is up by almost a quarter. The report by Irving Yass shows that overall, traffic lights deliver benefits, but, if incorrectly sited and managed, then individually they can cause undesirable impediment and frustration. Poole-based Siemens has retained a significant contract in Dorset for the maintenance of all related traffic control equipment and traffic information systems for a period of 10 years. In addition, Bournemouth Borough Council, the Borough of Poole and Dorset County Council have awarded a 5 year contract to the locally-based company for the supply of traffic signal controllers, equipment and street furniture. A new traffic signal pole specifically designed to provide low-level access has been introduced by Siemens. The exclusive new design provides safe access near to ground level in Extra Low Voltage (ELV) installations, minimising the need to work at height and easing maintenance, and is further evidence of the company exploring new and innovative traffic solutions.
The first phase of a new Urban Traffic Control (UTC) system with wireless communications has been supplied to North Lincolnshire Council by Siemens in partnership with wireless communications supplier IDT. Aimed at reducing congestion in Scunthorpe, the new system includes a PC SCOOT from Siemens driving the latest Siemens UG405 compliant outstations. Initially nine traffic signal locations have been linked to the UTC system over a total distance of 2.4km, using an iMesh™ communications solution, an open standard wireless network supplied by IDT. A busy bus link to Basildon town centre has been equipped with new digital enforcement cameras based on Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)technology from Siemens to help provide a better bus service for people living, working and visiting the area. A new solution for speed enforcement will be trialled on Springdale Road in September for six months. The trial will be conducted by Siemens with the support of Borough of Poole council, Dorset County Council, the Dorset Safety Camera Partnership and Springdale First School. The new SafeZone cameras, which measure the average speed of vehicles travelling between points, have been developed by Siemens and are being installed to test the viability of using this solution to reduce speeds near a school.
