London Low Emission Zone

In February 2008, the city-wide Low Emission Zone (LEZ) will be implemented by Transport for London (TFL). Only trucks, taxis and buses fulfilling a specified emission standard will then be able to drive through this zone.

To ensure effective control of the zone, TFL has commissioned Siemens to install digital cameras for automatic license plate recognition. It is the same solution already installed by Siemens in 2007 for the expansion of the London city congestion charge system. The Siemens solution is able to successfully identify vehicles in London’s busy city center traffic which have failed to pay the congestion charge. Its low operating costs also enable the city to invest more money in public transport.
