Having completed articles with Waterhouse & Co in 1980, Ian joined Siemens plc in 1981 to set up the Legal Department.
He became Company Secretary in 1985, a position he held for six years. In 1991, Ian set up Siemens Group Services, an ‘internal outsourcing’ organisation which subsequently grew into Siemens Shared Services.
He and his family moved to Germany in 1997 when he was appointed Senior Director, Mergers & Acquisitions, at the HQ of Siemens AG. Major deals included the sale of the company's GPT stake to GEC and the establishment of Fujitsu Siemens Computers. Upon his return to the UK in 2000, Ian took up the position of Finance Director, Siemens Business Services.
In 2002, Ian set up Siemens plc's Mergers & Acquisitions Department, which supports all M&A transactions in the UK. From July of that year, Ian also acted as MD of Siemens Environmental Systems Limited, in Poole, to manage the restructuring, and ultimately in October 2003, the sale of the business.
In the summer of 2004, the Corporate Development Department was formed with the aim of promoting and supporting the Company’s UK strategy. Ian headed up that department, which also includes the pre-existing M&A activity, until assuming his current role.
Ian obtained a law degree in 1977 from Oxford University (Mansfield College). For 18 years he served as an officer in the TA and was awarded the Territorial Decoration (TD) in 1995. These days Ian competes in triathlons and recently completed his first Ironman competition.
