The entire infrastructure is being designed, supplied and installed by Siemens in partnership with Global Crossing, which is managing the upgrade on behalf of the Office of Government Commerce.
The system handles around 20 million calls every month and is used by 110,000 civil servants working in 90 government departments in more than 550 locations across the UK. Siemens is creating what will be one of the world’s largest private global IP networks, an ingenious high-tech solution that enables voice data to be transmitted digitally using the internet.
Government employees will be able to enjoy the full functionality of their office phone via their mobile phone, PDA or PC, regardless of location or the network infrastructure to which they are connected. For example, calls can be routed to their home telephone via the office network, or to their PC via a secure internet connection.
Their user profile will also be available from that phone, giving them access to all of the features they would normally have at their office desks, including feature keys, voicemail, call forwarding and diverts.
