The Big Bang™ is a free, annual event led by the Engineering and Technology Board and developed in partnership with over 70 organisations from business & industry, government and the science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) community with support from across the political spectrum. Featuring the National Science and Engineering Competition, The Fair aims to excite, educate, stimulate and enthuse young people about opportunities in STEM. Inspiring them to follow careers in this rewarding field.
The first Fair took place 4-6 March 2009 with over 6500 young people, teachers, representatives from STEM organisations, government ministers, members of parliament and peers witnessing the UK’s first celebration of UK science and engineering. The National Science and Engineering Competition is coordinated by the British Science Association in partnership with Young Engineers and The Big Bang™. Principally funded by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, and open to students 11-18 across the UK, the competition aims to raise the profile of science and engineering in the UK.
The finals of the first National Science Competition were held at the first Fair in 2009, with students showcasing their projects to visitors and judges. A high profile awards ceremony during The Big Bang™saw the first UK Young Scientist of the Year and The UK Young Technologist of the Year being crowned. The competition has now been extended toThe National Science and Engineering Competition culminating in the UK Young Scientist of the Yearand UK Young Engineer of the Year being awarded.
