Siemens employees in the UK raised nearly £100,000 via the Disasters Emergency Committee for the victims of the tsunami that devastated large areas of south Asia on Boxing Day 2004.
The figure was matched by the company, giving a total donation of almost £200,000. Globally, Siemens employees and pensioners raised around €2 million – matched euro for euro by the company.
Elsewhere in the world, Siemens in the USA provided critical technology and basic infrastructure to aid the disaster relief effort in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
This included water filtration systems, power generators, medical equipment and communications equipment. US employees helped by making company-matched donations to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.
Following the Beslan school siege in Russia in 2004, Siemens supplied a nearby children's hospital with a complete ultrasound system and mobile x-ray equipment worth €110,000 to ease the treatment of injured schoolchildren.
In addition, Siemens donated €50,000 toward the psychological support of the survivors and is providing some of the technical equipment needed to build a new school in the town.
