In this tough economic climate, companies face not only financial challenges, but also environmental ones, and the question is how to balance a high level of productivity with environmental responsibility. At Siemens, we believe it is our role as a responsible, reliable and innovative partner to identify the right solutions to those unique manufacturing issues.
In this area of our exhibition, we will feature innovative green technologies which will not only help in protecting the environment, but also in the delivery of efficient productivity. Our environmental technologies enable more efficient use of energy, provide solutions for processing waste to energy. We help to ensure cleaner air by providing gas analytics to monitor industrial emissions.
Energy Management
With electric motors accounting for 60% of energy used in industry, there is huge potential for saving energy and reducing greenhouse gases by using energy efficient motors with variable speed drives. A working conveyor shows how energy efficiency can be maximised using Siemens drive technologies for material handling.
Water Management
Clean water shortage is one of the biggest challenges of our time and today around 40% of the world’s population has no access to clean drinking water. Innovations are the key to counter this shortage and we will demonstrate our state-of the art water treatment systems which can help to reduce water consumption in industrial plants by as much as 90%, ensuring that they perform consistently and effectively. We also show how water recycling and re-use, as well as network monitoring and leakage management can all contribute to ensuring a reliable supply.
Waste Management
Solutions for processing waste to energy are becoming more and more important as landfill sites become full to capacity and efforts to find clean energy solutions increase. We demonstrate how our automation and control technologies provide solutions for processing waste to energy, with particular reference to biomass fuels. Addressing the challenge of air pollution, which accounts for one quarter of all illness worldwide, we feature process analytical and monitoring systems for measuring flue emissions and ensuring compliance.
Balancing Productivity with Environmental Care
Underpinning all of our solutions is Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) technology which seamlessly fits together to streamline processes and offers maximum efficiency, flexibility and productivity. With half of all energy being lost on its way from the source through industry applications and then on to the final user, intelligent automation solutions ensure optimisation potential, providing greater efficiency, for example through improved information flow or optimised process management. We are showing a range of components of Totally Integrated Automation, which provides a unique solution from the field level, through the controls, all the way up to the management level, and will benefit a plant throughout the whole life cycle. Investing in these technologies to become more operationally efficient will bring a rapid ROI for most companies, ensuring profitabilityalongside environmental responsibility.
Our cities contribute substantially to climate change. Although major urban areas cover only one percent of the planet’s surface, they consume roughly 75 percent of the world’s produced energy and emit about 80 percent of the gases that are harmful to the climate. The Sustainable Cities exhibition zone will showcase Siemens’ extensive range of products, solutions and services, providing answers to urban challenges in the areas of transportation, buildings, lighting and water as well as safety and security.
At Home
Each home in the UK creates enough CO2e in a year to fill a hot air balloon (around 5.5 tonnes). Our demonstration kitchen helps to put theory into practice and highlight how taking simple measures, such as switching to the latest, low-energy LED lighting or using an ultra- efficient micro-CHP (combined heat and power) boiler which also generates electricity, can help to reduce energy consumption drastically and limit our personal impact on the environment.
At Work
Buildings account for 40 percent of all UK CO2e emissions. Visit the ‘At Work’ area to see the latest energy-efficient technologies that can be incorporated into office environments - both on a new build and retrofit basis. See how you can showcase your efforts on carbon reduction by using the Green Building Monitor and how the latest fire and security solutions can create more sustainable environments for us to live and work in.
On the Move
Travel is an essential part of our daily lives. Siemens offer sustainable transport infrastructure solutions for greener cities. Take a look at the very latest developments in rail travel, parking and zone enforcement - including the award winning Car Finder solution - as well as the new technologies that can be included to help Airports balance their sustainability and energy consumption objectives with efficient solutions to meet passenger needs.
At Leisure
From shopping centres to swimming pools, Siemens can help to make the places we spend our free time more inviting, more energy-efficient and more environmentally-friendly. We highlight key case studies and reference sites that utilise various elements of the company's environmental portfolio for a greener future.
