Siemens VAI Metals Technologies Ltd is a global leader in engineering design and plant construction in the iron and steel industries. We employ approximately 500 people in the UK in our offices in Stockton-on-Tees, Sheffield, Christchurch and Scunthorpe.
Our Sheffield office designs and supplies steel plate rolling mills – the most powerful metal-working machines in industry – as well as continuous casting plant, rod mills and aluminium mills. We employ some 80 engineers at our Sheffield site, mainly mechanical, but including all the main engineering disciplines. This is a project engineering business, undertaking large capital projects worldwide on both a new-build and modernisation business. The technology of steel rolling is impressive in both physical scale and engineering sophistication. A typical plate mill is the size of a large house, with drive power peaking at over 40 MW, and yet it controls rolled-product thickness to a tolerance less than the diameter of a human hair.
The Metallurgical Services department (based in Sheffield) works closely with customers to ensure that their investment continues to run to the specifications that the equipment was designed for. Working closely with our colleagues in Italy and USA the Long Rolling department supplies Upgrades, Guides, Spare Parts and service to Rod and Bar Mills throughout the world.
